What to Bring Kayaking?

IMR What to Bring Kayaking

Not everyone has tried kayaking and if you’re looking forward to your first kayak rental, you should prepare all the necessary things to make your trip comfortable. This kayak gear list can help you. You don’t have to worry! Your first kayak trip will surely be memorable.

Many items needed for kayaking are already available at the establishment like PFD, kayaks, and paddles. You won’t need to bring bulky items. However, the things you need to prepare will depend on what time you’re planning to go and how long you’re planning to kayak.

1. Waterproof Bags

This one is important for any water adventure. You won’t have to worry about your essentials getting wet such as cameras, cellphones, clothing, and food. Note that you shouldn’t overpack to save yourself from all the hassle. Just prepare one to two sets of dry clothes if you’re only kayaking for the day.

2. Bilge Pump or Sponge

Being prepared is always beneficial. That’s why it’s important to include a bilge pump or a sponge on your checklist. This one can save you if water enters your kayak. Panicking won’t help you when this happens. A sponge or a bilge pump can do wonders.

3. Tent

If you’re kayaking for a long period, bringing a lightweight tent is the way to go. Being one with nature is always fun, but it doesn’t mean that you should sleep on the ground. Sleeping on your kayak is also hazardous and is not advisable. Another reason is the weather. When choosing a tent, make sure that it is easy to bring and is compact.

4. Sleeping Bag

Just like the tent, this is necessary if you’re kayaking for days. A sleeping bag can provide you with more comfort than you might think. You’ll be able to sleep comfortably especially if the ground is damp from the rain or morning dew. Opt for a synthetic sleeping bag that will keep you warm.

5. Iodine Tablets or Water Filter

This can come in handy especially if you’re not kayaking on fresh water. It can be burdensome if you consume contaminated water. On the other hand, boiling the water can also be a struggle. A water filter or a few iodine tablets don’t weigh much and will definitely make it easier for you.

6. Sunscreen

When you go kayaking for the whole day, the heat of the sun can become unbearable. A sunscreen with at least 30 SPF can go a long way. Remember to put on the sunscreen at least every two hours to ensure its effectiveness. Don’t skimp on it and do put it on your chin and nostrils. You may not know this, but even if you wear a hat, the reflection of the sun off the water can still get you.

7. Laundry Bag

It is vital that you separate your clean clothes from the dirty ones. This is done to avoid any dirt or awful smell mixing with your clean clothes. You’ll be grateful that you included this on your list.

8. Paddle Leash

This one serves as the strap for your paddles to avoid any unfortunate event from happening. The current or waves can carry your paddles away from you and a paddle leash can guarantee that won’t happen.

9. Waterproof Watch

Getting your phone out can be a struggle, especially if you are holding paddles in your hands. You won’t always have to look for your phone to check the time if you have a waterproof wristwatch. In that way, you’ll know if it’s getting late and it’s time to go back or if you still have time to explore and enjoy the water.

10. Compass

Having a compass can come in handy if you’re someone who gets turned around easily and is not that good with directions. A compass can save you time and energy. You won’t have to paddle around in circles when you know the exact direction you’re going.
